Bishopsbourne
A village has existed here for at least 2,000 years, and probably much longer, while the church has stood on this site for about 1,500 years, and been at its heart.
It and the village are mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Both will have seen generations of villagers, and their lives – birth, baptism, marriage, and death, as also the passing of the seasons, year after year.
In our village, we have
Street
The main street on which most people live and which runs from west to east is called ....The Street.
The church stands at the western end, it passes what was once a forge, the village hall, a recreation area called the Neame Meadow, the pub, and ends beyond that.
Church
The medieval church, typical of such churches in England, Wales and Scotland, and yet unique is the largest building in the village, and has been for a thousand years.
Neame Meadow
The recreation ground was made available to the village by a local land owner, Matthew Bell.
In 1973, the then owner, Richard Neame, gave it to the village, after which it was named as it is today.
Village hall
Construction was started in 1924, and Joseph Conrad was a main influence. He died soon after, and a collection in his memory used to add the front porch, together with a sculted medallion above the door. It was then named the Conrad hall.
